Roads
The road access at Cross Winds is always quite easy. We travel at about 55-60 ft total length with the truck and travel trailer attached. We are always a wee bit nervous anytime we are dealing with wooded sites since our unit is quite tall for a travel trailer (still quite small compared to most 5th Wheels). Cross Winds is never a cause for concern for us. We love the fact that we know we will be able to get in and out of their roads with ease. Only note is that their roads are TWO WAY but single wide. Since majority of campers out there are considerate this has never been an issue. This is especially true of the D sites since they have the buddy sites.
Bathhouse
We personally try to not use the bath houses at any campground unless absolutely necessary. Part of what we love about camping is that we are a self contained unit. Their bathrooms are decent. Could use a wee bit of an update in style but are defiantly more than adequate. The reason I left it at 3 is for one if you are at the bottom of A, B or D the bathhouse is a walk away and there is only one so its good that the campground is meant for self contained units. However compared to Daddy Joe's and RiverWalk RV who we also visited this year the bathhouses just are not as nice.
Playground
I personally love their playground but am super cautious as most of the equipment is older. Our son loves their amazing slide but the stairs to get there make a mom of a young toddler quite nervous. They are quite steep and they also make for some bruised up knees but that is part of raising a boy!
The airplane they have on the playground is by far one of the best features and we really love watching our son drive and fly the plane. (As well as pretend to crash it) Some of the items could definitely use some TLC but the playground here is one our son will enjoy for many years.
Fishing
There is a small pond at the end of the A and B sections. It is defiantly big enough for quite a few campers to fish. The few complaints we have had is that you have to pack your own chairs as there are only two places to sit and that no fish ever seem to want to bite. Either the fish are so well fed or have a particular diet that we just did not have any luck. The area was washing out coming from the A section compared to a year prior when we stayed. I know 2020 was a rainy year so hopefully it doesn't continue. Would love to know what is actually in the pond.
Pool
There is a small pool at Cross Winds. While we did not use the pool the last trip we did use it Labor Day Weekend 2019. It is very small and very limited. For the size of the campground I found this to be slightly a disadvantage for a overall amazing campground. It unfortunately allowed for people to be rude in using the chairs and table all day leaving one person in the pool area. Also when you have parents who do not parent children it leaves for wild children in everyone's space.
Sites
Sites the most important part! At Cross Winds we stayed in D-2 & D-2A this visit and on a previous visit D-22 and D-23. D-2 was a breeze to level and was quite nice. My father in-law also had no issues on D-2A. I will say it did look like the grounds had recently brought in gravel to both sites. D-2 and D-2A are buddy sites which allowed us to have a huge space in the middle for our son to run between campers. This was great as we actually were looking at our in-laws camper so we always had eyes on him. The buddy sites at Cross Winds is its HUGE ADVANTAGE and I wish other campgrounds would take their example. From our previous stay D-22 and D-23 did require a little more leveling but when I scoped out these sites during this visit I believe the owners had leveled them more. One of the best parts of Cross Winds is that the owners have the equipment to level their sites and take care of them on the property. From what I have heard from others you can discuss any issues politely and directly with the owners and they will work on fixing it. Only comment we had was that site D-2A shared its water with site D-3. Unfortunately due to all the rain they had to work in a partially flooded water box.
Extras
As far as extras there are not a lot directly in the campground however, the location of this campground gives you plenty of opportunities to explore Lexington, Spencer and the Yadkin River. The only extra per say that this campground has is its unique Buddy sites that by far are some of the best Buddy sites I have ever seen as they accommodate just two sets of campers. They do have one triple site.
We personally went and visited the NC transportation museum during our stay. We had originally had tickets for a day with Thomas and Friend but the wonderful COVID cancelled those plans. The Transportation Museum was definitely a unique place to visit and even our 2.5 year old enjoyed his time there with the trucks, trains and planes. It was 7 minutes from the campground so not out of the way at all.
Overall we will be back. We like the closeness to home as well as the buddy sites here. It is a super easy tow from Winston Salem and is a great campground for any new campers looking for a campground to shake out the newness.
